ENGINE RUNS WIDE OPEN

1.Throttle stuck open. Spray carburetor cleaner in the air horn to break up varnish, which may be holding the throttle plate open. If this does not do it, then spray WD-40 in the air horn and see if this frees it up. Also spray WD-40 on the throttle shaft on the outside of the carburetor.

2.Govenor is incorectly adjusted or not working at all.To staticly adjust the governor, locate the governor arm and loosen the nut on the bottom of the arm. Rotate the governor arm so the throttle is in the wide open position. Now hold what you got and turn the governor shaft in the same direction you rotated the arm. Tighten the nut and that will do it. If you are adjusting a Tecumseh governor, loosen the screw with a 1/4″ nut driver and follow the above procedure.

If the govenor is not functioning at all, then chances are it has fell apart in the engine for various reasons (mechnical govenors only). This must be replaced or your engine will run at excessive speeds and may cause internal failure of the engine.

3.Govenor linkage is improperly connected to the carburetor. If this is the case, then E-mail me and I will send you instructions on hooking up the govenor linkage. Click Here If you need diagrams for Briggs and Stratton engines. Click Here If you need a diagram for Tecumseh engines.

I cleaned the carborator out on my B & S motor. An took it totally apart to make sure my float wasn’t sticking. I then made sure my throttle cable wasn’t loose, which it wasn’t. However when I put everything back together, it cranks first crank every time (it did before too) but it doesn’t try to idle it goes straight to wide open an I can’t figure out what it is. My buddy said it could be the governor in the crankcase but I will have to get rid of the motor if that’s the case because I had to weld a bead around the key to keep it from coming out. The motor is a 20 hp Briggs and Stratton Go-Devil mud motor. With duck season here I’m suffering.
    Thanks,

I have a Tecumseh engine on my 2008 Ariens st520E 5 HP and I removed the carb to clean it out. Since then I guess in the reassembly process, I may have gotten the linkage for the carb to governor hooked up wrong. I finally got it NEAR the proper adjustment but I had to put a curve in the link from the governor arm to the carb quadrant. Is there any way you can send me a pic of the proper holes to put the linkage in ? I have low speed and also high speed but the hi speed is a bit rough and the govenor arm is viabrating/shaking more than it did. I am waiting on a mini tach to check things over.

I had the carburetor replaced on my push mower and now it runs wide open. It’s a Troy Bilt mower with a Honda engine and it has a choke that pulls back and once it starts it releases itself but as soon as it releases and the choke is no longer on it runs wide open. It runs so hard I seriously thought it was going to blow up. If I wouldn’t have ordered the new carburetor and gaskets I would just trash it and get a new one just because it’s been such a pain. Would like to have it fixed if possible but I know absolutely nothing about it. Can anyone help a girl out?

I have a 27HP BRIGGS EXT LIFE sitting on a CRAFTSMAN 917.276341 rider. DID NOTHING to this engine but shut it down. A few minutes later tried to restart it, and it runs full throttle w/ no “FULL” speed fuel on. What can I do to repair this P.O.S.? I have since looked for obstructions, Loose springs and loose hardware – NO joy! Any help is appreciated.
